There are no other wild species of this genus in the bay area.
Older leaves are often covered in a sooty mold. There are multiple species of sooty mold associated with california yerba santa (Eriodictyon californicum) which are difficult to tell apart. The sooty mold is actually there for insect honeydew and don’t directly attack the plant, but it does end up blocking photosynthesis. [source]
