trilliums

genus Trillium

Member of trillium family (family Melanthiaceae)
monocots (class Liliopsida)
flowering plants (subphylum Angiospermae)

There are no other wild species of this genus in the bay area.

Key features:

western trillium
Trillium ovatum var. ovatum
  • flower is stalked
  • stamens are yellow or ± white
  • the local subspecies is ssp. ovatum

See also california fetid adderstongue (Scoliopus bigelovii).

giant wakerobin
Trillium chloropetalum
giant white wakerobin
Trillium albidum

If the stamen and ovary colors differ, some on iNaturalist claim that the ovary color determines the species, but Jerpson says the anther color determines, and FNA simply says that a range of intergrade hybrids exist. The direction of anther dehiscence may be the correct identifier, but I can’t tell the difference in photos.
