stem sawflies

family Cephidae

Member of insects (class Insecta)
hexapods (subphylum Hexapoda)
arthropods (phylum Arthropoda)
animals (kingdom Animalia)

Despite their common name, sawflies are a type of wasp, so called because of their saw-like ovipositors. The larvae bore into stems, especially of grasses, and eat them from the inside. They are a problem for grain crops, particarlly since pesticides cannot reach them in their hidey holes.
