false bindweeds

genus Calystegia

Member of bindweed family (family Convolvulaceae)
dicots (class Magnoliopsida)
flowering plants (subphylum Angiospermae)

Except for extremely rare examples that I don't expect to encounter, there are no other wild species of this genus in the bay area.

Key features:

Bracts > 1 mm below calyx, not hiding it, ≤ 5 mm wide

I.e. thin bracts can be seen further down the pedicel than the calyx.

pacific false bindweed
Calystegia purpurata
western morning glory
Calystegia occidentalis ssp. occidentalis

Bracts < 1 mm below calyx, ± hiding it, > 4 mm wide

I.e. the bracts look like a second calyx enclosing the real calyx, and there aren’t thin bracts further down the pedicel.

hillside false bindweed
